Students Release Ladybugs in Greenhouse
What is the life cycle of a ladybug? Just ask second graders! To complement a unit on insects, students received ladybug larva a few months ago and have been able to witness them grow through complete metamorphosis, or the biological process in which an animal physically develops after birth (or hatching).
For ladybugs, once the eggs hatch, they begin the larva stage where they shed their skin and begin to grow and look for food. The pupa stage is next where they attach to a leaf and appear to be sleeping. They are actually going through the metamorphosis stage to become actual adult ladybugs.
As the second graders living lesson came to a close, it was time to release them; where better to do this than in the Greenhouse?! Ladybugs eat unwanted pests and their eggs that would otherwise kill gardens and destroy forests. They provide pest control to farmers so they will be a helpful addition to our growing's here at CSAT.
As an added bonus, the teachers dressed up as ladybugs to support the cause! Go, team!
